Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life—and it deserves to be captured beautifully. But without a solid timeline, the day can feel rushed, stressful, and overwhelming.
I'm a Calgary wedding photographer based in NW Calgary, and I've seen firsthand how a well-planned timeline transforms a wedding day. When couples have a clear schedule, they're more relaxed, more present, and more able to enjoy every moment.
In this guide, I'll walk you through a complete wedding photography timeline—from getting ready to the first dance—so you can plan a day that feels joyful, not hurried.
Why a Wedding Photography Timeline Matters
A timeline isn't just about photography. It affects your entire day. Here's why it's so important:
1. Less stress. When everyone knows what's happening and when, the day flows smoothly. No one is rushing or wondering what comes next.
2. Better photos. Good lighting, relaxed subjects, and enough time for each part of the day all lead to better images.
3. More time together. With a clear timeline, you actually get to enjoy your day—instead of feeling like you're racing from one photo to the next.
4. Happy vendors. Your photographer, videographer, coordinator, and venue staff all work better with a shared schedule.

Sample Wedding Photography Timeline
Every wedding is different, but here's a common timeline that works well for Calgary weddings, especially during the summer months.
10:00 AM – Getting Ready Photos Begin
This is when I arrive at the bride's getting-ready location (usually a hotel room, family home, or bridal suite). I'll capture:
Details: dress, shoes, jewellery, invitations
Candid moments: bridesmaids helping with the dress, emotional moments
Final touches: makeup, hair, veil

Pro tip: Choose a room with good natural light. Large windows make a huge difference.
11:30 AM – Groom Getting Ready Photos
I'll send a second photographer (or quickly pop over) to capture the groom getting ready. This includes:
Putting on the suit or tuxedo
Cufflinks, watch, and other details
Candid moments with groomsmen

12:30 PM – First Look (Optional)
A first look is a private moment before the ceremony where the couple sees each other for the first time. It's become very popular for several reasons:
It calms nerves
It saves time after the ceremony
It gives you more photos together
Pro tip: If you're having a Calgary summer wedding, the lighting at 1 PM is harsh. Consider a shaded location for your first look

1:00 PM – Bridal Party Photos
This is when we capture photos with the bridesmaids and groomsmen. It's also a great time for:
Bride with bridesmaids
Groom with groomsmen
Full bridal party group shots

1:30 PM – Couple's Portraits (Before Ceremony)
This is the main portrait session with just the two of you. We'll find beautiful spots around your venue or nearby location.
Pro tip: For Calgary summer weddings, mid-afternoon can be bright and harsh. We'll find shaded areas or use diffused light to create soft, flattering portraits.
2:30 PM – Final Touches
Take a moment to relax, have a snack, and let the photographers prepare for the ceremony. This is also when we photograph:
Ceremony venue details
Floral arrangements
Seating setup

3:00 PM – Ceremony
The ceremony is the heart of your wedding day. I'll capture:
Processional (entrance of the wedding party and bride)
The ceremony itself (vows, ring exchange, first kiss)
Recessional (walking back down the aisle)
Pro tip: Let your photographer know about any ceremony restrictions (no flash, no movement during certain parts). Calgary churches and venues often have specific rules.

3:30 PM – Family Photos
This is often the most overwhelming part of the day for couples. To make it easier:
Create a list of family groupings beforehand
Assign someone to gather family members for each shot
Keep it efficient—this isn't the time for creative portraits

4:15 PM – Couple's Portraits (After Ceremony)
Now that the ceremony is done, we can take more relaxed, creative portraits. The lighting in the late afternoon is usually softer and more flattering.

5:00 PM – Cocktail Hour
While guests enjoy cocktails and appetizers, you'll have a moment to breathe. This is also a great time for:
Golden hour portraits (if timing works)
Candid reception photos

6:00 PM – Grand Entrance
The first moment you're announced as a married couple. This sets the tone for the reception.

6:15 PM – Speeches and Toasts
Speeches from the best man, maid of honour, and parents are meaningful moments to capture.
Pro tip: Have the venue place the speakers in good light. The photographer needs light to capture facial expressions.

7:00 PM – Dinner
Candid moments during dinner are always beautiful—laughter, tears, and genuine emotion.

8:00 PM – First Dance
The first dance is one of the most romantic moments of the night. I'll capture:
The dance itself
Close-ups of facial expressions
Wide shots of the crowd watching

8:30 PM – Dance Floor Opens
This is when the party really begins. Candid photos of guests dancing, laughing, and enjoying themselves.
9:00 PM – Cake Cutting
A classic wedding moment. We'll capture:
The cake cutting itself
The cake feeding (playful or romantic)
Reactions from guests
10:00 PM – Golden Hour Portraits (If Timing Works)
If your wedding is in the summer and your timeline allows, we'll step outside for 10–15 minutes of golden hour portraits. This is the best light of the day.

11:00 PM – Send-Off
Capturing the end of the night—sparklers, confetti, or simply a beautiful goodbye.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much time do I need for photos on my wedding day?
I recommend at least 1 hour for couple's portraits and 30 minutes for bridal party photos. Family photos typically take 20–30 minutes. The full timeline above is about 8 hours from getting ready to the first dance.
What if I don't want a first look?
That's completely fine! We'll adjust the timeline accordingly. Without a first look, we'll do all couple's portraits after the ceremony, which means we'll need more time between the ceremony and reception.
How do I choose the best time for photos during a Calgary summer wedding?
Golden hour (the hour before sunset) is ideal. In Calgary, sunset is between 9:30 PM and 10:00 PM in the summer. We'll plan for golden hour portraits accordingly.
What happens if it rains on my Calgary wedding day?
I always bring backup equipment and rain covers. We can also find covered areas at your venue or use umbrellas for creative rainy-day photos.
When should I book my Calgary wedding photographer?
Popular Calgary photographers book 12–18 months in advance. I recommend booking at least 6–12 months before your wedding date, especially for summer weddings.
