The Magic of Outdoor Cake Smash Sessions in Calgary

There's something truly special about celebrating your baby's first birthday surrounded by Calgary's natural beauty. While we absolutely love our studio sessions, there's a unique charm to outdoor cake smash photography that captures the spirit of summer and the joy of your little one's milestone moment.

Today I'm sharing photos from one of my favourite outdoor cake smash sessions—a timeless shoot from 2020 that proves great photography never goes out of style. And I'm thrilled to announce that outdoor cake smash sessions are officially back for summer 2026!

Why Choose an Outdoor Cake Smash in Calgary NW?

Calgary offers some of the most stunning outdoor photography locations in Alberta. From the rolling foothills to the majestic mountain views, here's why an outdoor cake smash might be perfect for your family:

Breathtaking Natural Backdrops

Unlike studio sessions where we create the environment, outdoor sessions let nature do the heavy lifting. Wildflowers, rustic fences, and mountain views add texture, colour, and dimension to your photos that simply can't be replicated indoors.

More Room to Move

One-year-olds are exploring their world, and outdoor spaces give them room to crawl, stand, and yes—smash that cake! More space means more natural, candid moments.

Fresh Air & Sunshine

Calgary summers are glorious, and your baby will love the sensory experience of grass beneath their feet, warm sun on their skin, and gentle breezes while they discover their birthday cake.

Unique, One-of-a-Kind Photos

When you choose an outdoor location, your photos are truly unique. No two sessions look exactly alike because the light, flowers, and season all play a role in creating something special.

Behind the Scenes: A Classic Calgary Outdoor Cake Smash Session

I'm sharing this 2020 outdoor cake smash session because it perfectly captures what I love about photographing first birthdays in Calgary's beautiful outdoors. While this session happened a few years ago, the location and styling remain absolutely timeless—and I can't wait to create similar magic this summer!

Location Scouting

For this session, I chose one of my favourite Calgary NW locations—a spot with:

  • Gorgeous rustic fencing

  • Rolling farmland views

  • Stunning mountain peaks on the horizon

  • Beautiful wildflowers in bloom

  • Dreamy sunset lighting

The location offers everything you could want for a Calgary outdoor cake smash: natural beauty, privacy, and that classic Alberta feel that families love.

The Setups: Three Looks, One Magical Session

I believe in giving families variety, so I created three distinct setups for this outdoor cake smash:

Setup 1: Boho Chic Cake Smash

The main event! I set up a beautiful lavender boho-chic spring garland with a burlap "ONE" sign hung between trees. This created a gorgeous focal point for the cake smash portion of the session.

Pro tip: I learned the hard way that balloons and outdoor sessions don't always mix—they popped almost immediately in the wind! Now I recommend more weather-resistant decorations for outdoor shoots.

Setup 2: Vintage Tub & Wildflowers

Just steps away from the cake smash setup, I nestled a vintage tub I found at Michaels into a patch of wildflowers. The Rocky Mountains provided the most incredible backdrop, making this setup absolutely dreamy.

This required some careful logistics—I brought a painter's tub of warm water, towels, wipes, and a thermos of hot water just in case. Carrying everything from my car to the setup spot was... let's call it an adventure!

Setup 3: Vintage High Chair

For an extra unique element, I brought my vintage wooden high chair that I'd rescued from our garage. I'd brought it home from a family vacation in Penticton, BC years ago, and after a good week of prep work, it looked perfect for my boho-chic cake smash vision.

The classic rustic farm look is timeless, and this high chair added such a special touch to the session.

The Cake: To DIY or Not to DIY?

One question I often get from Calgary families is about the cake. Should you make it yourself or buy one?

For this 2020 session, I decided to try making a "naked" cake myself—the simplest cake ever using two store-bought cake mixes. Even with the simplest recipe and store-bought mixes, it still cost about $20 and took 2-3 hours of my time.

My honest opinion? If you see a beautiful $50 cake at a bakery that perfectly matches your session's colour scheme, it's worth every penny! But I also completely understand wanting to make it yourself, and I support whatever works for your budget and vision.

Fun fact: There's a myth that babies will completely demolish the cake. In reality, they often have no idea what to do! It's usually parents who get them started. In this session, the family was able to take the cake home and enjoy it afterward—so nothing goes to waste!

What to Expect from Your Calgary Outdoor Cake Smash Session

Weather Considerations

Calgary weather can be unpredictable, even in summer! I always recommend:

  • Having a backup indoor location in mind

  • Being flexible with timing (morning or evening light is best)

  • Dressing baby in layers

  • Bringing a cozy blanket for between setups

What to Bring

Based on my experience with this and many other outdoor sessions, here's my recommended packing list:

  • The cake (obviously!)

  • Extra outfit for baby (cake gets everywhere!)

  • Wipes and towels (lots of them)

  • Warm water for clean-up

  • A change of clothes for parents (you'll want to snuggle your messy baby!)

  • Snacks and drinks for baby and family

  • A blanket for seating and warmth

  • Baby's favourite toy for comfort between setups

Session Length

Outdoor cake smash sessions typically run 1-1.5 hours, giving us plenty of time for:

  • Setup and styling

  • The cake smash itself (20-30 minutes)

  • Clean-up and outfit change

  • Family portraits (if desired)

  • Backup shots in case baby needs breaks

Behind the Scenes: A Note From Danielle

When I look back at this 2020 outdoor cake smash session, I remember how much work went into making it happen—the multiple trips to the car carrying props and water, the wind that made little Bentley chilly at times, and the unpredictable Calgary weather.

But I also remember the joy. The laughter as Bentley explored his cake. The pride in his parents' eyes. The beauty of that mountain backdrop. And the satisfaction of creating something truly unique for a family I love.

That's why I'm so excited to bring back outdoor cake smash sessions for summer 2026. After a few years focusing primarily on studio work, there's something magical about returning to these outdoor sessions that reminds me why I fell in love with photography in the first place.

So if you've been wondering about an outdoor cake smash for your little one, now is the perfect time to book. Let's create some beautiful summer memories together!

Quick Reference: Outdoor Cake Smash FAQs

When should I book my session?

I recommend booking at least 4-6 weeks in advance, especially for summer dates.

What's the best age for a cake smash?

Most babies have their first birthday cake smash right around their first birthday, but I've photographed them for babies anywhere from 11 months to 14 months!

What if the weather is bad?

We'll keep an eye on the forecast and reschedule if needed. I always have backup dates in mind.

Do you provide the cake?

I provide a nake cake unless you purchase one from a bakery. I can provide recommendations for Calgary bakeries that create beautiful smash cakes!

Can we include family photos?

Absolutely! Many families choose to add family portraits to their cake smash session. Just let me know when you book.
