Calgary Family Photo Outfit Guide 2026: How to Look & Feel Your Best (Free Styling Guide Inside!)

If there's one question I hear more than any other as a Calgary family photographer, it's this: "What should we wear?!"
And honestly? I get it. Choosing outfits for a family photo session can feel overwhelming. You want everyone to look cohesive but not matchy-matchy. You want to feel comfortable but still polished. And you definitely don't want to look back at your photos in ten years and cringe at your fashion choices.
I wrote a blog post about this back in early 2025 that ended up being one of my most-read articles ever—which told me loud and clear that Calgary families are hungry for styling advice.
So I decided to create something even better.

But first, let's walk through the essentials together.
Start with Inspiration (Before You Even Open Your Closet)
Before you start pulling pieces from your wardrobe, take a beat to gather some inspiration. Hop on Pinterest, scroll Instagram, or browse photography blogs to create a mood board that captures your family's vibe.
Are you drawn to soft, airy neutrals? Earthy, muted tones? Or do you love a rich, moody palette?
Having a visual reference makes it so much easier to see how colors and styles will flow together. It also helps you avoid the dreaded "I'll know it when I see it" panic when you're standing in your closet.
Pro Tip: Think about where your session will be. A mood board that includes your location—whether it's my Bearspaw NW location, my Fish Creek Park SW location, or my studio in Calgary NW—will naturally guide your color choices.
Coordinate, Don't Match (Please, No Matching T-Shirts!)
The days of everyone wearing the exact same white shirt and jeans are over. In 2026, it's all about coordination.
Choose 2–3 key colors and carry them through everyone's outfits in different ways. If mom is wearing a floral dress with hints of blue and yellow, dad can wear a blue shirt and the kids can have accessories in yellow.
This approach lets each family member show off their personality while still looking like a unified squad. It feels more genuine, more relaxed, and honestly? It photographs so much better.
Mix Textures, Patterns & Layers
Flat, one-dimensional outfits can make your photos feel flat too. The secret sauce is variety.
Think about mixing:
Textures: Tulle skirts, lace dresses, denim jackets, cozy knits, corduroy, velvet—the options are endless!
Patterns: Small, subtle prints in soft or neutral colors add visual interest without overwhelming the frame. Skip the loud, busy patterns (and please, no character t-shirts).
Layers: Cardigans, blazers, scarves, and vests not only look great but also give you flexibility if the Calgary weather decides to do its usual thing (which it will).
The goal is balance. Each piece should contribute something unique while still harmonizing with the rest of the group.
Comfort is Non-Negotiable (Especially for the Little Ones)
I can't stress this enough: if you're not comfortable, it will show in your photos.
Choose soft, breathable fabrics that let you move freely. For kids, this is especially important—a fidgety, uncomfortable child does not make for a relaxed photo session.
And please, for the love of all that is good, break in those shoes before the session. Nothing ruins a family portrait faster than blisters and cranky feet.
Accessorize Thoughtfully
Accessories are where you can really let your family's personality shine.
Think flower crowns for the kids, a stylish belt or statement necklace for mom, a sharp watch or fedora for dad. Bow ties, suspenders, and headbands can add that extra pop of charm.
But here's the golden rule: less is more. One or two well-placed accessories will elevate your look. Too many, and it starts to feel cluttered.
Match Your Location
Your outfit choices should complement your surroundings, not compete with them.
For a beach or garden session: Light, airy neutrals work beautifully.
For a wooded forest or open field: Earthy tones like matte green, navy, and muted burnt orange are stunning.
For an urban or downtown setting: A slightly more structured, classic look with rich tones feels right at home.
When your outfits harmonize with the environment, your photos feel intentional and polished.
The Details Matter (Yes, Even Nail Polish)
It's the little things that take a good photo to a great one:
Footwear: Choose classic, timeless styles—leave the flip-flops and neon sneakers at home.
Hair & Makeup: Treat yourself! Professional hair and makeup is an investment you won't regret. You'll feel pampered, confident, and camera-ready.
Nails: Check for chipped polish (and if you're wearing sandals, don't forget the pedicure).
Ironing: Yes, iron the outfits. Wrinkles are surprisingly visible in photos.
Be True to Yourself
At the end of the day, your family photos should feel like you.
Don't force your daughter into a dress if she hates dresses. Don't make your son wear a bow tie if he thinks it's silly. Happy kids make for happy photos—period.
Incorporate elements of your family's culture, interests, and quirks into your wardrobe choices. When you let your authentic self shine through, those are the photos you'll treasure forever.
