Calgary summers are beautiful—long days, golden light, and lush greenery. It's the perfect time for outdoor maternity photos. But summer also brings challenges: heat, harsh midday sun, and unpredictable weather.

As a NW Calgary maternity photographer, I've photographed countless summer sessions and learned exactly what works—and what doesn't. In this guide, I'll share 7 tips for a dreamy outdoor maternity session in Calgary.

1. Choose the Right Time of Day

The most important factor in outdoor photography is light. In Calgary's summer, the sun is high and harsh from about 11 AM to 4 PM. This creates unflattering shadows and squinting.

The best times for summer maternity photos are:

  • Golden hour: The hour after sunrise or before sunset. The light is warm, soft, and flattering.

  • Blue hour: The brief period after sunset when the sky turns a deep blue.

  • Overcast days: Cloudy skies act as a natural diffuser, creating soft, even light.

Pro tip: In Calgary, sunset in June and July is between 9:30 PM and 10:00 PM. Plan your session accordingly.

2. Choose the Right Location

Calgary has many beautiful outdoor locations for maternity photos. Here are some of my favourites:

Fish Creek Park – Lush greenery, walking paths, and beautiful river viewsPrince's Island Park – Urban oasis with gardens, bridges, and the Bow RiverEdworthy Park – Wide open spaces, river views, and the historic bridgeNose Hill Park – Sweeping prairie views and golden grassesSpruce Meadows – Stunning gardens and equestrian charm

Pro tip: Choose a location with some shade. Even during golden hour, having trees or structures to diffuse light is helpful.

3. Dress for the Weather and the Location

Calgary summers can be hot, so choose breathable fabrics. But summer storms can also roll in quickly, so layers are helpful.

My top outfit recommendations for summer maternity photos:

  • Flowing maxi dresses in chiffon or lightweight fabrics

  • Neutral colours: cream, blush, sage, soft blue, or dusty rose

  • Barefoot or simple sandals for beach or grass locations

  • Hat or flower crown for added style

What to avoid:

  • Heavy fabrics that trap heat

  • Dark colours (they absorb heat and create harsh shadows)

  • Patterns that are too busy (they distract from you)

Pro tip: Bring a shawl or light jacket. Even on a warm day, Calgary can cool down quickly in the evening.

4. Don't Forget the Details

The details make the photo special. Consider bringing:

  • A bouquet of fresh flowers

  • A baby blanket or family heirloom

  • Ultrasound photos

  • Baby shoes or a onesie

  • Signs with baby's name or due date

Pro tip: Coordinate colours with your outfit. If you're wearing cream, choose flowers in blush and sage.

5. Be Prepared for Calgary Weather

Calgary weather is famously unpredictable. It's not uncommon to experience all four seasons in one day.

My advice for summer maternity sessions:

  • Book your session with a 2–3 week window (in case of rain)

  • Have an indoor backup plan

  • Bring a light blanket for sitting on the ground

  • Bring water and stay hydrated

  • Wear sunscreen (but avoid shiny or greasy SPF)

Pro tip: I always monitor the weather forecast leading up to the session. If rain is forecast, we'll reschedule at no extra cost.

6. Stay Comfortable and Hydrated

Being pregnant during a Calgary summer is no joke. Take care of yourself:

  • Drink plenty of water before and during the session

  • Take breaks as needed

  • Wear comfortable shoes (I won't see your feet in most shots)

  • Bring snacks if your session is long

Pro tip: I always bring a cooler with cold water for my clients during summer sessions.

7. Trust Your Photographer

This is the most important tip. I've been photographing maternity sessions in Calgary for years. I know the locations, the light, and what poses are flattering.

  • Trust my direction

  • Be patient with the process

  • Have fun—the best photos are the ones where you're laughing and relaxed

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to take maternity photos in Calgary?

The best time is between 28–36 weeks pregnant. At this stage, your bump is beautifully round, but you're still comfortable enough to move and pose. Summer sessions are beautiful, but book early—I get booked up months in advance.

How long does an outdoor maternity session take?

Most sessions take 1–1.5 hours. This allows time for outfit changes, walking to different spots, and getting comfortable.

What if it's too hot or too cold during my session?

We'll reschedule if the weather is extreme. I monitor the forecast and always communicate with you leading up to your session.

Should I bring my partner or children?

Absolutely! Maternity sessions can include your partner, children, or even pets. These are your family photos.

What should my partner wear for maternity photos?

Coordinate colours without matching exactly. If you're wearing cream, he could wear a soft blue shirt or beige pants. Neutral and earthy tones work best.
