Capturing the beauty of pregnancy is an art form that requires careful thought and planning. Maternity photography is an opportunity for families to celebrate their growing bonds and document this miraculous journey. In this post, I will explore the key elements that create stunning maternity photography sessions. From choosing the right location to selecting outfits, I'll ensure you have the tools you need for a memorable maternity photoshoot.
Understanding Maternity Photography
A maternity session typically takes place during the third trimester, usually around 28 to 34 weeks of pregnancy. This timing is ideal as women's belly are pronounced and women often feels more comfortable. It is worth noting that I feel capturing the essence of pregnancy entails choosing the right environment, outdoors or instudio, and conveying emotions that highlight the beauty of your expectuancy.
For instance, lots of couples & families opt for picturesque outdoor settings, when the weather's warm enough in Calgary, that reflect their personalities and tastes. Some clients prefer parks, gardens, or urban landscapes offer diverse backdrops that can enhance their visual story. It's important to ensure that clients are comfortable and the focus is capturing the right moments.

Choosing the Right Location for Stunning Shots
I strongly believe the backdrop for maternity photography is crucial. Choosing an epic location definately enhances materity photos. The locations I use really resonate with my personal style and as a Calgary photographer. Using the beauty of Fish Creek Park and Iconic Albertan farmlands and majestic backdrops. I feel it's why client's choose me as their maternity photographer.
Here are a few other popular locations to consider if you have a different style:
Nature Parks: Parks provide a serene atmosphere, with greens and flowers adding to the calming effect. Natural light filters beautifully through the leaves, creating luminous images. I also use a different location in Fish Creek Park with a natural creek in the background.
Urban Settings: If you enjoy a more modern aesthetic, consider urban locations. The juxtaposition of city architecture against your radiant pregnant form can create striking visuals. I always encourage clients to choose what feels right to them.
In-Studio Session: Some families prefer the comfort of my Calgary NW home studio. It offers a cozy boho vibe and evokes feelings of intimacy and warmth. It showcases stunning natual window light, covered with lace curtains to create a beatifully diffused light. The ideal light for soft and dreamy maternity photos.
When selecting your backdrop, ensure it reflects your personality and sets the mood you wish to convey. Keep in mind that lighting plays a crucial role—golden hour (the hour after sunrise or before sunset) is particularly favorable for its soft, golden hues. It's my favourite time of the day to shoot outdoors.

Outfits That Make the Magic Happen
Choosing the right outfits is essential in maternity photography. Clothes should flatter the pregnant form while also expressing your style. Here are some tips to consider when selecting outfits for your maternity session:
Comfort is Key: Ensure that the clothing you choose is comfortable and fits well. You want to feel at ease during the shoot, which will reflect in your expressions.
Solid Colors or Subtle Patterns: Solid colors tend to photograph well, complementing the softness of pregnancy. If you opt for patterns, choose subtle designs that won’t distract from your beautiful figure.
Accessories: A statement accessory can add interest to your outfit. Hats, flowy scarves, or intricate jewelry can elevate your look while still keeping the focus on your belly.

Common colors for maternity photoshoots include soft pastels, earthy tones, or classic whites and blacks. The right outfit allows for movement and flow—think maxi dresses or fitted garments that highlight your shape.

Posing for Stunning Shots
Posing is an integral part of a successful maternity photography session. The right poses can enhance the beauty of your baby bump and showcase your emotions. Here are a few pose ideas:
Hand-on-Belly: A classic pose that instinctively draws attention to the belly. This pose is simple yet powerful, conveying the love and connection you feel with your unborn child.
Silhouette: Capturing a silhouette can create a dramatic effect. Standing against a light source will allow the shape of your body to stand out beautifully.
Interaction with Nature or Props: Consider incorporating items like flowers or personal items that symbolize your journey. Holding a pair of baby shoes or cradling a flower can evoke a gentle emotion in the photo.
As a photographer I love to offer guidance on poses that feel authentic to clients and align with the shoot's overall theme. Pose naturally; don't hesitate to try different angles, as variety will give you a wider selection of stunning images!
Capturing Emotions and Moments
The essence of maternity photography lies in capturing emotions. As a skilled maternity photographer, I will focus on genuine moments, telling the unique story of client's pregnancy. Whether it’s the joy in a smile or the quiet moments of reflection, these nuances create powerful narratives.
Candid Shots: I ecourage clients to act candid and natural. Laughing, looking out into the distance, or having a fun moment with loved ones adds authenticity to my images.
Family Involvement: Including partners or siblings can create touching family dynamics within the shoot. These images will become treasured memories, showcasing the joy of impending parenthood.
Happy interactions create lasting impressions. Take a breath, relax, and focus on enjoying the moment—this mindset will convey your feelings beautifully through the camera lens.
How to prepare for a Maternity Session
Preparation definitely makes a significant difference in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable maternity photography session. Here are essential steps to help get you ready:
Consultation: I communicate with my clients about their vision for their shoot. Discussing preferences regarding locations, outfits, and poses. This collaborative approach sets clear expectations from clients. And aligns their vision.
Plan Your Session: Select a date and time that allows you to feel your best but aim for week 28-34, when your belly is nice and round. Consider any other commitments that might cause stress on the day of your shoot.
Get Plenty of Rest: A good night's sleep before the session can help you feel renewed and energized. Hydrate and eat well to maintain your energy level.
When clients feel nervous I encourage them before their maternity photography session, to practice some poses in front of a mirror. Familiarizing themselves with how they wish to present themself can alleviate any pre-session nerves. Ultimately, the goal is to create a relaxed environment where they feel beautiful.
