Capturing the essence of motherhood is a beautiful moment that deserves to be immortalized through maternity photography. One of the best times to take stunning maternity photos is during the golden hour. This period, shortly after sunrise or before sunset, casts a magical light that is ideal for creating enchanting photographs. In this blog post, we will explore why golden hour photography is perfect for maternity shoots and how you can make the most of this exquisite time to capture those precious moments.

The Magic of Golden Hour Maternity Photography

Golden hour maternity photography takes advantage of the soft, warm light that is present during this unique time of day. During this period, the sun is low in the sky, creating beautiful, diffused light that adds a touch of magic to your images. The advantages of shooting during this time include:

  1. Soft, Flattering Light: The light is less harsh than during midday, softening shadows and giving a warm glow to the subjects.

  2. Warm Tones: The golden hues enhance skin tones, making expectant mothers appear radiant.

  3. Dynamic Backgrounds: With the sun near the horizon, backgrounds are often more vibrant, which adds depth and interest to the photos.

All these qualities contribute to the creation of dreamy and ethereal images that are perfect for maternity photography sessions.

Planning Your Golden Hour Maternity Shoot

To take advantage of the beauty of golden hour maternity photography, planning is essential. Here are some tips to ensure your photoshoot aligns perfectly with this fleeting time of day:

Choosing the Right Location

Selecting a location is crucial. My Calgary NW location has a beautiful open space with a field and tall grass, and the rolling farmland ideal for capturing nature’s beauty during golden hour. My SW location is near water, and also provide stunning reflections.

Timing is Key

Golden hour varies depending on the time of year and your geographical location. I use online resourcesand weather apps to find out the precise time of golden hour in my different Calgary locations. Clients arrive at their chosen location one and half hours early, so there's ample time to set up and capture the perfect shots as the light changes.

Wardrobe Considerations

Choosing the right maternity outfit/gown contributes significantly to the overall aesthetic of your maternity photos! These days I op for client's wering flowing dresses in softer colors, particularily creams in the summer or copper and greens in the fall, that complement the golden hues and surroundings. Some of my maternity gowns fabric flutter with the breeze, adding movement to photos. Layers can also enhance a look while providing versatility during the shoot.

What Month of Pregnancy is Best for Maternity Photos?

Timing your photoshoot during pregnancy is essential for capturing the perfect images. I recommend scheduling your session between 28 and 34 weeks. At this stage, your baby bump is beautifully pronounced without being too uncomfortable for you to pose.

  • 28-34 Weeks: This timeframe typically showcases a well-defined belly, representing the journey of motherhood. Expectant mothers often have more energy around this stage and can pose with confidence.

  • Early Pregnancy: While beautiful, capturing maternity photos too early may result in an undefined bump. However, some mothers prefer to document this phase as part of their journey.

  • Late Pregnancy: Shooting too close to your due date might not yield the results you're aiming for, as the discomfort of late pregnancy can hinder poses and expressions.

By timing your maternity shoot appropriately, you can ensure you capture the beauty of your pregnancy in its prime.
